City of intellectuals, authors and publishers

Frankfurt is a city of the mind, the birthplace of Goethe and Adorno, the place where the philosophers Schopenhauer and Hegel expounded their theories, the place of inspiration and creation for many critics, poets, philologists and writers – such as the Frankfurt doctor Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann, creator of “Struwwelpeter”.

Book industry
Many publishing houses have located in the city, including long-established ones like S. Fischer or Deutsche Fachverlag. With more than 4,500 titles per year, Frankfurt is the 4. largest publishing city in Germany. The city also boasts the highest density of bookshops.

Frankfurt Book Fair
The most important event in the international book industry takes place in Frankfurt. It is organised by the German Book Trade Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels), the association of German booksellers and publishers. 290,469 people visited the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2009. A further attraction is the awarding of the German Book Industry Peace Prize (Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels). This is one of the most significant national awards and has been presented for the last 59 years at the Book Fair in the Frankfurt Paulskirche.

German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek)
Frankfurt hosts the central library archive and the national bibliographic centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. All German and German-language publications are kept here and are accessible to the general public. The Frankfurt library has a total book stock of approximately around 9 million “units”.

Frankfurt Literature House (Literaturhaus Frankfurt)
A favourite meeting place for authors and publishers, it has been presenting contemporary national and international literature in readings, book presentations, exhibitions and symposia since 1991.
