Adult education centre

The Adult Education Centre (Volkshochschule - VHS) in Frankfurt is the largest adult education centre in Hesse. With 140 employees and around 1,200 course instructors, we conduct some 4,500 events with almost 50,000 participants a year.

Our broad range of courses is divided into six thematic areas:

  • Society: In addition to courses on history, politics, psychology, religion and pedagogic studies, seminars include those with a Frankfurt-related theme as well as travel, learning and memory training, and intercultural education.
  • Culture: The topics, art, literature, music, photography, etc. are supplemented by design courses (drawing, painting, stone sculpture, sewing, etc.).
  • Health: The courses range from methods of alternative medicine to relaxation techniques, cookery courses to sports (swimming, gymnastics, fitness, etc).
  • Languages: We not only offer frequently desired languages such as English, French, Spanish and Italian, but rather, we offer nearly 30 languages. One of our focal points is German as a foreign language for immigrants.
  • Job: Our spectrum of job-related further education includes courses and activities for commercial professions and EDP qualifications (basics, office application, graphics & multimedia, Internet, programming, operating systems / local networks) as well as social and pedagogic occupations.
  • Special: To enhance students' participation in society and to improve their opportunities on the labour market, we offer both alphabetisation courses and measures to help them catch up on secondary and secondary modern school qualifications. Furthermore, we also address both older citizens as well as children and young people between the ages of 8 and 18 with special courses.

We also offer many topics as educational leave. In addition, we direct our range of courses to organisations and companies, and conduct in-house seminars. The courses are offered at both a central location (e.g. in the new training centre ‘Bildungszentrum Ost’, Sonnemannstraße 13) and at decentralised locations in many areas of the city. In the interest of its participants, the VHS Frankfurt am Main has had the quality of its courses successfully certified.

Prospective students can obtain information and register online directly at the VHS web site. If you would like to find out more in person, our telephone service is available to assist you. For more detailed questions, tests and specialist advice please visit our service centre at Sonnemannstraße 13.
